who shows up when you come out to play?

SHARON’S GREAT ART ADVENTURE EPISODE 18

This has been an exciting week for me of exploration into my personal archetypes. Dictionary.com defines archetype (in Jungian theory psychology) as “a collectively inherited unconscious idea, pattern of thought, image, etc., universally present in individual psyches.” Archetypes are the “characters” in each of us that come out to play in every facet of our lives.  Our archetypes speak to how we interact with the world around us.  So it makes sense then that my archetypes will show up in my art.

I am somewhat familiar with archetypes.  My friend Cecile and I were at a conference some years ago where Deepak Chopra was talking about archetypes.  At the moment he was defining and giving examples of the rebel archetype, Cecile looked over her shoulder, pointed at my scribbled notes, words and sentences in every direction diagonal, perpendicular, some that turned a corner, everything but within the ruled lines of the page and said, “rebel.”  I laugh every time I think of that.

So I took an archetype quiz this week.  One with 33 questions to rate myself on a scale of 1 – 5.  One being least like me and 5 being most like me.  The directions said I should come up with 8 answers with a 5. My list has 10.  I went back and tried to whittle it down to 8 but they all seemed to fit so I kept the 10.  Is this the rebel again?  Funnily enough, rebel didn’t make the cut.  Although in many areas of my life I have done things differently than mainstream, I don’t consider myself a non-conformist.  So here are my top 10 in no particular order: storyteller, engineer, king/queen, healer, mystic, performer, lover, writer, detective, princess/prince.  All of this will be very useful in my work and as I begin to focus on marketing.  Have you delved into your archetypes?  If so, how did it help you if at all?  If you haven’t taken a look at your archetype/s there are quite a few websites out there that offer a free quiz.  I’ve included links to a few below.

Now on to art for this week.  I’m writing this on Thursday January 21, the day before this will arrive in your inbox and I don’t have a finished piece to show you.  I do have a couple of WIP (works in progress) both of which are at a very ugly stage which I deem too ugly to share.  This is another hurdle for me because my thought about this weekly email is that I would always be sharing new art and although I will be painting this afternoon, I don’t want to rush something to be finished.  As I’ve thought about this, I recognize that there is a lot going on internally for me.  A lot of newness that I am assimilating.  So while there is no finished product to show for it yet, I am confident and trust it will all bear beautiful fruit.  As one of my readers Jacqui shared with me after last weeks episode, pay attention to the little things yes, but don’t sweat the small stuff.  So this is me not sweating. ūüėÖ

Have a great weekend folks and see you next week.
